Here's the question: You're a young college kid, but schools out for summer so you have an abundance of time. You have a budget of $7500, and you want to buy and build the fastest damn car you can. What would you start with, what would you build, and then what would you do with it?
Personally, I'd start with an older, carbureted, long bed, kinda junky pick up like an old C10 or F100. They can be had for a couple grand, lets say $3000. A cam, intake, heads, headers, and carb later and I'd have a tire scorching 400+ hp truck (I'm envisioning starting with a SBC). Any left over money can go towards rubber for the truck to get a little handling out of it, but it'd be a stop light to stop light warrior.
You?

The only possible answer to this is NA Miata + Supercharger.

Maybe another Bronco, or a Mustang II, Nova, Duster, etc.
I find it hard to imagine a college kid having $7500 to spend though.

You want a Malaise-era car with a V8. They aren't in demand and that V8 is going to respond damn good to bolt-ons like aluminum heads and non-dished pistons. Scrounge up enough for an Ebay turbot and you'll have something that really scoots!

Crazy idea; I wish I had the time, equipment, and money to make my own car.
I'm talking the 1950's way, by hammering aluminum into a body shape.

Bonus points if you get a Torino wagon.

I would probably buy a cheep old Fairlane/Torino/Ranchero with the 351w and build the motor. Say about $2500-$3000 for the car which leaves about $4000 to build the motor and upgrade the brakes and with the 351w 4k goes a long way towards good power and good driveability.

In Europe: Buy a sporty hatchback (eg. 205 gti, civic vti, mk2 golf gti) then lighten it by stripping stuff out, get some bolt on mods for the engine (cams, head etc.) and finally some suspension upgrades.

Do-able? Yeah, will it end up being a well-built car? No.

That is NOT the fastest possible car with $7500. They'll do 13s to high 12 in the 1/4. Fastest around a twisty road? No. Figuring 4K for a solid Miata and 2-3k for a supercharger setup doesn't leave much for tires or suspension.

Various Nissan turbo stuff can get you "fast" for that price, as can turbo Honda stuff. E36 would be the most consistently fun to drive. American iron captures the mood better, though. Fox bodies aren't as easy to make super powerful as people suspect, though - maybe some kind of modified C4 Corvette? Or go older and find stuff that has several hundred horsepower, and let the power make up for the weight.
A lot of options. Go for something crazy.

Won't disagree there, but help me find "fun" in this sentence:
You have a budget of $7500, and you want to buy and build the fastest damn car you can.
